Join us Friday, July 8 at 9:45am for our Friday Financial Forum. We will meet at the Friday Forum Room at Arvest's East Side Branch, located at 4225 S.E. Adams Rd. in Bartlesville, Okla.*

This week we'll begin with an ensemble from Children’s Musical Theatre, well known for their Broadway-style productions showcasing outstanding choreography and live orchestra. They will be performing selections from their upcoming production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which will be on stage with a cast of talented local youth at the Bartlesville Community Center July 14-17. More information is available at* regarding Children’s Musical Theatre of Bartlesville.

Our featured speaker is Harry W. Birdwell, secretary of the Commissioners of the Land Office, who was appointed by Gov. Mary Fallin in May 2011. Birdwell is responsible for managing the state school land trust assets established at statehood.

The Commissioners of the Land Office owns and manages 750,000 acres of land in Oklahoma, making the agency the second largest owner of real estate in the state. More than 1,100,000 acres of mineral holdings provide great opportunity for the trust to grow, with the continuing growth in energy production in Oklahoma. Before Oklahoma became a state, U.S. Congress set aside land in for the sole purpose of generating revenue to support public education. Oklahoma’s constitution establishes the Oklahoma Commissioners of the Land Office as the keeper of the “sacred trust.”

In the past four years, distributions to public education beneficiaries and growth of the investment trust have been unequaled in state history. Distributions to public education beneficiaries have increased by 57 percent over any other four-year period in Oklahoma’s history, while growing the permanent trust funds by $700 million. Permanent trust investments are valued at $2.3 billion.
