The Season for Giving Back

The next couple of months will be filled with hustle and bustle, celebrations and gift giving, but it’s also an important time to give back to others in your community. Here are a few ideas of how you can help others during this holiday season.

  • Party with a purpose. If you’re hosting a party this season, charge your guests an “admission fee.” Pick an organization to support and ask your guests to bring a donation to that charity. This doesn’t have to be a monetary donation. Consider collecting non-perishable food items for your local food pantry or new/gently used coats and blankets for an area homeless shelter.
  • Give the gift of time. Charities are always in need of volunteers. Whether it’s helping build homes with Habitat for Humanity or picking up litter in your local park, there are endless possibilities where you can donate your time. There are numerous websites, such as* and*, that list volunteer opportunities in your area.
  • Surprise a soldier. There are thousands of servicemen and women who won’t be able to be with their loved ones this holiday season, so why not send them a little bit of home? Send our military personnel service a care package. A quick internet search provides the names of charitable organizations that do just that. Most of these organizations accept monetary donations to put together military care packages or provide a list of items that you can donate to the group for the packages. If you’d like to send one on your own, check the United States Postal Service’s Guidelines and Restrictions* for sending mail to the military.

As you schedule your calendar for the holidays, don't forget to make room to give back to your community.
