Holiday Entertaining on a Budget

‘Tis the season for holiday celebrations! Whether it’s an intimate dinner party or a blowout bash, there are ways to throw a great party without breaking the bank.

  • Make it a team effort. Share hosting duties – and expenses – with a friend, plus the extra help will make it less stressful too! Or, involve your guests by asking them to bring their favorite wine or dessert to share with the group.
  • Keep the list short. You don’t have to invite the entire neighborhood or everyone in your office to your party. Narrow down your guest list and you’ll save money on the cost of the food and drinks. This will give you more time to enjoy your guests too, rather than constantly making the rounds and worrying if everyone is having fun.
  • Be progressive. Get a small group of friends together for a progressive dinner where each friend hosts the group for one course of the meal. Then, it’s off to another home for the next course. This is a great way to split up the costs and the work!
  • Downsize. A full bar, 10 appetizers or a six-course meal is not required to make your guests happy. Stick with a few crowd favorite dishes and drinks for your friends to nosh on while they mingle.
  • Simplify the invitations. You don’t have to send custom invitations on expensive stationery. If you’re having a casual soiree, consider an email invitation using a free online invitation service like*. If you feel like you need to send an invitation by mail, try a DIY invitation. Check out Pinterest* for ideas or purchase a downloadable template on Etsy* that you can print at home.

With a little planning you can stick to your budget without missing all the fun!
